When is Seattle Whale Watching Season?

Whale sightings from Puget Sound and the surrounding area are breathtaking. But when is the best time for whale watching in Seattle? All year! That’s right: Generally speaking, you can spot Orcas, gray whales, and humpback whales all year in the Pacific Northwest.

But if you want a more specific answer regarding the best time for whale watching in Seattle, we’d suggest exploring the area May through October. During this season, southern resident Orcas travel through the San Juan Islands.

Seattle Orca Whale Watching

Just 90 miles north of Downtown Seattle, you’ll find Seattle Orca Whale Watching tours on San Juan Island. This is one of the best spots in the area to see wildlife in its element, and over 90 percent of tours in peak season get to see orcas up close. Plus, San Juan Island is home to tons of exciting wildlife: seals, eagles, porpoises, humpback whales, and more. Each tour has a cap of 40 people, so you can easily ask the onboard Naturalist any questions throughout the journey.

San Juan Safaris

Also located on San Juan Island, San Juan Safaris has been a part of the local community for over 20 years! This company offers two different Seattle whale watching tours to choose from. The Classic Whale Watch & Wildlife tour is perfect for larger families who can check out the 360-degree viewing deck or duck into the heated cabin to warm up on a cold day. If you’re in the mood for a faster-paced experience, the Adventure Whale Watch & Wildlife tour is a high-speed vessel that cruises at 35 knots in search of Seattle’s majestic wildlife.

Clipper Vacations

Clipper Vacations boasts the only whale watching tour service that leaves directly from Seattle, so it’s a great choice for out-of-towners who don’t want to fuss with extra transportation. During Seattle whale watching season, this tour navigates the Salish Sea to view aquatic life in its natural habitat. From orcas to humpbacks to grays and minke whales, you’re bound to see something wonderful.
