Why is My Steering Wheel Shaking?

Honda Steering Wheel

My steering wheel shakes when I drive! What should I do? The alignment of your wheels is likely the culprit. When your wheels and tires aren’t balanced properly, it can lead to vibrations in your steering wheel. However, there are other possible causes to why your steering wheel is shaking. Read on to learn more about what can cause a vibrating steering wheel as you drive around Woodinville or Redmond.

My Steering Wheel Shakes – Possible Causes

Why is my steering wheel shaking? We cover some of the most common causes below. It’s important to bring your vehicle in for service when this happens to address the issue and prevent more serious problems down the road.

  • Unbalanced wheels: The weight distribution of your wheels is important. When the weight isn’t distributed evenly during wheel and tire installation, it can cause the vehicle to vibrate. This problem is more common if the vehicle has a lightweight suspension system. Be sure to address the issue promptly to prevent future issues with the shocks, struts, and other steering components.
  • Misalignment: Improper wheel position can also lead to a shaking steering wheel. If this is the case, you will also likely notice uneven tire wear.
  • Bad bearings: Bearings that are damaged or not lubricated enough will cause friction that can lead to a shaking steering wheel. A simple cleaning and re-lubrication of the bearings may be all that is needed.
  • Suspension issues: If parts are worn or loose, your steering wheel may shake. Once again, it is important to address the problem quickly or additional damage may occur.
  • Brake issues: Worn brake pads, defective brake discs, or worn shocks can cause steering wheel vibration.
