Why Is My Car Overheating?

Overheating Car Engine

Kirkland drivers often ask us at Honda of Kirkland, “Why is my car overheating?” There are many reasons for a car overheating, from a leak in the cooling system to problems with the radiator. Most cars operate somewhere between 195 and 200 degrees Fahrenheit. If your car temperature gauge is showing higher than average temperatures, do not drive your vehicle. Driving an overheating car is dangerous, and it will only cause more extensive and more expensive problems down the road. Learn more here about what causes a vehicle to overheat, and contact us at Honda of Kirkland if you have any questions.

What Does It Mean When Your Car Overheats?

An overheated vehicle is a clear sign that you have a pressing issue to handle. Here are the most common reasons overheating happens on Redmond roads:

  • There’s an issue with the radiator – Radiator problems are another common reason a vehicle may overheat. There could be a leak, blockage, or an issue with the radiator fan.
  • There’s a leak in your cooling system – Most of the time, a leak in the cooling system is what causes your car to overheat. The radiator, water pump, hoses, thermostat housing, and head gasket are all cooling system components that can cause leaks.
  • Your water pump is broken – Your water pump sends engine coolant throughout the cooling system. You might have a leak or a shifted pump shaft in the water pump, which could cause overheating.
  • There’s a problem with your coolant – If someone put the wrong coolant in your car, or you have an improper coolant-to-water ratio (50/50 is proper), your engine could overheat.
  • There’s a blockage in the coolant hose – Another potential issue could be the coolant hose. If dirt and debris get in your cooling system as your drive around Woodinville, this can cause blockages in the coolant hose.

What to Do When a Car Overheats?

Unfortunately, your car may not overheat until you’ve ready to head out on Seattle roads. If that happens while you’re running the air conditioning, turn it off and run your heat at full blast. Yes, you’ll be uncomfortable, but it will help your engine cool faster. Then, pull over safely to the side of the road, but don’t attempt to pop the hood for at least 30 minutes, or you could get burned.
