How to Fix a Dent in a Car

Pointing at Car Dent

A dent or scratch in your vehicle doesn’t just affect its visual appeal. These imperfections can cause paint to peel and leave your vehicle less protected from the elements, ultimately reducing your car’s value and lifespan. Avoid these issues by repairing dents and scratches as soon as possible. Below, find out how to fix a dent in a car from the auto care experts at Honda of Kirkland.

How to Fix a Small Dent in a Car

Even small dents should be fixed right away, as they can quickly worsen if left as is. Here are a few solutions to consider:

  • Plunger: You can use a car-dent plunger, but a standard bathroom plunger works too. Place it over the dent to create a suction and pop the dent out. Bear in mind that it will likely take multiple attempts.
  • Hammer or Mallet: Put a towel against the underside of the dent to protect your vehicle surface. Then, lightly tap the dent out with a hammer or mallet.
  • Dent Puller: This option is best left to professionals, but if you have experience creating and working with a dent puller, it’s worth a shot. Drill a hole in the dent, feed a wire through it, and pull the depression out until it’s even with the rest of the surface. Then, fill and sand the hole and paint the area.

How to Fix Scratches on a Car

If you spot a minor scratch on your car, there are several ways to remove it. You may be able to prevent a trip to a Redmond service center with one of these methods:

  • Candle Wax: Clean the scratched area and rub candle wax over it. This provides a temporary seal for a quick fix until you can have the scratch professionally buffed out.
  • Paint Polish or Rubbing Compound: Try a light polish with a less abrasive foam pad to polish out the scratch. Work your way up to higher-grit substances as needs dictate.
  • Super Glue: Super glue is another good temporary solution. It seals the scratch, and because it’s clear, it’s hardly noticeable on your vehicle.
  • Touch-Up Paint: Best for deep scratches, touch-up paint conceals the imperfection. You can purchase this product at many service centers and auto supply stores in the Woodinville area.
  • Wet Sandpaper: If you have a shallow scratch and the above methods are unsuccessful, clean the area and sand it with wet, 2000-grit sandpaper. When the scratch is virtually invisible, apply a rubbing compound, then finer and finer polishes. Top it off with a wax or sealant for added protection, and give your vehicle a good wash and wax when finished.
