How Do Hybrid Cars Work?

Honda Hybrids

With hybrid electric technology having taken a major leap forward in just a few short years, Redmond drivers should have a better understanding of the answer to “how do hybrid cars work?” Hybrid cars are realistic and affordable options that save you money on gas and protect the environment. You can find out more below from Honda of Kirkland. Then, browse our extensive hybrid inventory!

Parallel Hybrid vs. Series Hybrid Vehicles

A hybrid vehicle uses two power sources: a traditional internal combustion engine, and an electric battery. In vehicles with hybrid systems, these two power sources work in concert to minimize fuel consumption. There are two common configurations of hybrid vehicles:

Parallel Hybrids

The majority of hybrids are parallel hybrids. In a parallel hybrid, both the electric motor and the gasoline engine are connected to the transmission. The power sources are blended together whether it’s an automatic, manual, or CVT system.

Series Hybrids

There are also series hybrids. They also have both an electric motor and a gasoline engine, but only the electric motor is paired with the transmission. In a series hybrid, the electric motor is the sole source of power and the gasoline engine generates electricity for the electric motor.

How Do Hybrid Cars Work vs. Plug-In Electric Vehicles?

Plug-in electric vehicles and hybrid cars are two distinct categories. In an electric vehicle, there is no gasoline engine and only electric power is used. However, as technology progresses, plug-in hybrids are also appearing on the market. Plug-in hybrids offer the benefits of both EVs and hybrids:

  • Increased battery packs allow plug-in hybrids to go further on electric power alone.
  • When driving short distances in Woodinville, a plug-in hybrid works much like an EV and relies on 100% electric power all day. Then, you recharge it at night.
  • If you need to go on a longer trip out of Seattle and it exceeds the electric driving range, you can still fill up on gasoline like you would with a conventional powertrain.
  • Since hybrid plug-in vehicles don’t rely solely on electricity, they only take between 1 and 4 hours to fully charge.
